SDC Delivers Thick Sectioned Composite Hardware for the Orion Spacecraft
SAN DIEGO, CA, January 2017 - San Diego Composites (SDC), has completed delivery of the Orion Fastener Blocks, a thick, contoured carbon fiber reinforced laminate structure.
SDC developed an optimized fabrication process that addresses the challenges unique to thick (1.5-inch), monolithic composite structures. These challenges included through-thickness thermal gradients, often leading to part warpage, fiber buckling, delamination, and increased void content. To minimize these effects, SDC designed and manufactured the tooling, developed a compatible layup and bagging approach, and established the thermal controls and cure parameters required to achieve a high quality part.
